VP Sports

Conor White

What do you do as VP Sports?

I support, represent and celebrate all 134 sports clubs alongside the sports coordinators in SUSU’s Activities team. I also lobby for access to sports, so that any student interested can get involved in a way that suits them.

What inspired you to become a Sabb?

I was inspired to become a Sabb by my passion for sports and my desire to make a positive impact on the student community. I found a home within our Men’s Cricket team and History Intramural football side, which both gave me a place to decompress from my studies and give back to those clubs as I undertook roles in their respective committees. Throughout my time here, I have faced several setbacks on medical grounds, that prevented me from being on campus as much as I would have liked. Despite these challenges, the sports community helped me stay connected, engaged and have fun, making me feel like I was still a part of the university life. This support system with our sports community motivated me to take on this role, where I can advocate for, and enhance, the sports experience for all students to ensure everyone can participate and benefit from staying active.

What’s been your favourite experience at Southampton so far?

My favourite experience at Southampton must be Varsity. The energy and passion displayed by our student body is immense. It’s the one event on the annual calendar where every student can get involved, have fun, and leave feeling like they are part of the inclusive culture that defines our university. I can never recommend Varsity highly enough to each year’s new cohort of students and those who haven’t engaged with the event before. It’s an event I look forward to growing and building upon, continuing the successes of past years.

What are you most looking forward to over the next year?

Over the next year, I am looking forward to working closely with our sports club and societies to enhance their offerings and ensure they have the support they need to thrive. Whether that is by giving them more of a platform to promote their clubs via social media, giving them more access to certain facilities and what they can offer, or aiding them financially to ensure they make their club as accessible to students as possible. Ultimately however, I am excited to really get stuck in, and to give back to the sports community that has fundamentally shaped my time here in Southampton.
