VP Education & Democracy
Rebecca Would
A bit about me and my time at the University of Southampton (and SUSU)
Hi I’m Rebecca (she/her), lover of giraffes, crafts and all things education and representation! (No I’m not just saying this because it’s my role, improving education is a genuine passion of mine and I will talk about it to anyone who’ll listen!)
I came here to study Geography, but I ended up getting involved in nearly everything. From being a Course Rep and School President, to running the Folk Music Society, and joining Ballroom and Latin Dance, Brass Band and even IM Netball, I took the chance to try anything.
What do you do as VP Education and Democracy?
I represent your academic interests: taking your voice, ideas and opinions directly to university level education meetings; and supporting all of your elected Course Reps, School and Department Presidents and Faculty Officers.
Why did you become a Sabb in the first place?
Between my second and third year I took part in a couple of internships at the uni, that aligned with my interest in education and improving student experience – and some staff members I was working with (and a former VP Ed Dem!) started suggesting I consider running for the role. Given how much I enjoyed my representation roles it seemed reasonable to try and run in the election! I also love education and want every student to have the best education experience possible.
Why did you re-run?
I loved every minute of my first year, and wanted the opportunity to set in some of the work I’ve done with reps and students, and to see through some of the projects that were started last year. In particular I am excited to continue being part of the Advancing Assessments Project, as this is a top priority for me and for students. I also want to use the connections I have to be more ambitious in doing new things for students in my second year, hopefully helping to address some of the student issues I learnt about the first time round!
