University of Southampton Black Law Students Network

The University of Southampton Black Law Students Network (BLSN) is a safe space for Black students studying Law at the University of Southampton to network, form meaningful connections, access peer support, integrate with the larger Law school, and develop their academic, professional, and leadership abilities.

The Black Law Students Network (BLSN) is a safe space for Black Law students at the University of Southampton to connect and grow together. Law school can be stressful and sometimes isolating if you find it difficult to form the right connections. Our goal is to ensure you do not have to go through the journey alone. All students are welcome.

Activities We Offer

Throughout the year, we run Bi-Weekly Check-In Socials to provide Black Law students a chance to get to know each other better and support each other along the way. Each Check-In Social is designed to focus on self-development themes like coping with stress as a law student or applying for internship schemes. Working with others who understand you will allow you to feel like part of a community and to form professional connections that could last a lifetime. Peer Mentorship is also an important element that is built into the socials so students can get consistent guidance and support while developing their leadership potential.

Our other activities and events include:

Semester 1:

- A Networking Practice Social (October)

- Virtual Career Panel (November) where you can network with successful Black barristers and solicitors and ask them any questions you have about their legal journeys

-  An excursion to a law court (December)

Semester 2:

- A Practice Moot (February)

- A visit to a leading global law firm for a Career Planning and Commercial Awareness talk (April)

- An end-of-year Black Tie Dinner and Awards Ceremony (June)

Through these events and activities, we hope you will find ample opportunities to practice your professional skills, receive peer feedback, and take full advantage of the opportunities the Law School offers.

Once you come out to any BLSN event, you will be able to put a face to our names. We would love to introduce ourselves in person and support you in any way we can, so please don’t be a stranger. 🌞

We look forward to meeting you soon.

Wishing you the very best!
