Ge 'Sparkle' Gao - Vice President Communities

I’m really excited to be running for the role of Vice President Communities in the Student Union. I believe I’m a great fit for this position due to my diverse experiences, passion for creating an inclusive campus environment, and strong interest in organizing cultural and student events.

I’ve had the chance to study in China, the Czech Republic, and the UK, and I’ve also traveled to over 20 countries. These experiences have helped me develop a strong understanding of different cultures and how important it is to create spaces where everyone feels included and valued. My goal is to help connect students from all backgrounds and make sure everyone feels like they belong on campus.

I’m also really into music – I play several instruments, including the pipa, piano, and guitar. I’ve performed solo at events like the Chinese New Year Gala, and I’m an active member of the Folk Music Society here at Southampton. Music is something that brings people together, and I’d love to organize more music and cultural events for our campus. Whether it’s playing in a band, holding a solo performance, or simply hosting an event where students can experience music, I’m passionate about making this happen.

In terms of sports, I’m a member of UoS Roundnet and enjoy playing badminton, table tennis, ice skating, diving, and more. I want to bring more sports activities to campus, encouraging students to get involved, stay active, and enjoy their time here at Southampton.

As an international student, I know how it feels to be far from home and sometimes a bit lonely. I want to create events that help international students connect with one another, expand their social circles, and feel supported. I believe university life is about more than just academics, and I’d love to organize activities that help people build friendships and have fun outside of class.

I’m also active on social media and love documenting and sharing great moments. If elected, I’d use social media platforms to share the best moments from our campus community, creating memories that everyone can look back on fondly.

During my undergraduate years, I worked as a campus ambassador for several companies, organizing events and distributing promotional materials. This experience taught me a lot about event planning and leadership, and I’m confident I can apply those skills to this role.

If I’m elected, I’ll work hard to make sure that Southampton Uni is an even more vibrant, inclusive, and exciting place to be, filled with music, sports, and opportunities for everyone.
