Why vote for Ihuoma Osuji?
I am committed to advocating for an improved university experience for medical students. The following points exemplify some ways I hope to achieve this.
Central to this goal is the integration of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles into all aspects of medical education. While I am already engaged in promoting EDI initiatives within the faculty alongside other students and staff, I am committed to continuing this work. By ensuring that the curriculum represents the diverse backgrounds of our student body and the wider community, we can foster a positive environment where every student feels seen, valued, and confident to contribute as a culturally competent healthcare professional.
Improving placement experiences for students is also key. I am dedicated to enhancing placement allocations, both in terms of timeliness and equity. Through ongoing collaboration with the faculty, particularly through the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC), I intend to address the challenges, students face in preparing for placements by working to improve the allocation process. I also recognize the importance of supporting those with financial hardships amidst other personal circumstances and am committed to ensure these are considered. This will ensure a fairer and more supportive placement experiences for all students. Additionally, I am determined to facilitate the relationship between students and consultants on placement through more effective communication. By developing a platform for students to comfortably share information about themselves- e.g., preferred name, pronouns, and personal circumstances that may affect their placement- we can strengthen student-consultant relationships, aid students in building a social network, and ensure students feel valued as part of the clinical team.
Addressing the awarding gap is a challenge that requires institutional responsibility. I am resolved to collaborating with the faculty who recognize and are working to address these disparities in academic achievement. Building upon existing equity measures, we will continue to implement strategies to narrow the awarding gap, ensuring that every student has an equal chance of success. Supporting students through exam resits is also essential. By working closely with the MedSoc education and year representatives, I hope to make support more accessible for students during this time, and to work to normalise resitting as part of our learning journey.
Furthermore, rebuilding trust and strengthening student-faculty relationships is paramount. By prioritizing open, respectful, and honest dialogue, I aim to cultivate an environment where every voice is heard and valued. This involves preserving the welcoming atmosphere established in SSLC meetings, where students and staff communicate freely and respectfully. Additionally, I want to actively encourage students to voice their opinions and ideas, empowering them to effect positive change within the academic community. Ultimately, fostering a culture of mutual respect and collaboration, where students feel supported by staff and vice versa.
In conclusion, by collaborating with year representatives, staff, and the student body to develop new initiatives and continue existing efforts, I am dedicated to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students and foster a culture of growth and collaboration within the faculty.
