Sikh Society’s Langar event is back! Everyone is welcome to join and enjoy food together.

What is Langar?

Langar was created by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 1500s. It is free food available to everyone at any time, regardless of their gender, race or religion. Langar can be found in every Gurdwara across the world. It is run by Sevadars (volunteers) who prepare, make and serve the food, as well as wash up. Service without expectation of reward (Seva) is mandatory for every Sikh, as it instills humility and compassion in the mind.

Everyone sits on the floor whilst eating together, to highlight the fact that we are all equal. Everyone serves each other and no worldly titles remain in Langar; even a King would sit and eat next to a homeless person. All the food is pure vegetarian so that people of all beliefs can eat it.

  • Time: 18:00 – 21:30

The Fire Festival, known as “Chaharshanbe Suri” in Persian culture, is a vibrant and ancient celebration observed on the eve of the last Wednesday before Nowruz, the Persian New Year. This festival traces its roots back thousands of years to Zoroastrian traditions, where fire symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. The Fire Festival embodies the spirit of renewal, hope, and purification, marking the beginning of the Nowruz festivities.

May the flames of the Persian Fire Festival illuminate our hearts with warmth, joy, and unity. Wishing you a night filled with laughter, love, and cherished memories as we celebrate together. Happy Fire Festival!

The Persian New Year, known as Nowruz, is a celebration of renewal and the arrival of spring. Observed for over 3,000 years, Nowruz is deeply rooted in Persian culture and is celebrated by millions worldwide. It begins on the vernal equinox and lasts for about two weeks. Nowruz heralds the arrival of spring and the rebirth of nature after the cold, dark days of winter. The word “Nowruz” itself translates to “New Day,” reflecting the essence of renewal and hope that permeates this vibrant festival. Embedded within Nowruz is a tapestry of history, mythology, and cultural significance that resonates across generations and borders, uniting diverse communities in the shared embrace of tradition and renewal. From its mystical beginnings to its contemporary manifestations, the story of Nowruz is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity’s connection to nature, time, and the eternal cycle of life.
