Hidden Gems Around University from Alumnus, Emily Brown

University life can be a big adjustment but finding those unique spots around campus that resonate with your vibe can help ease the transition. Whether it’s cosying up your flat or discovering new places to unwind, I’ve picked these hidden gems to make your surroundings feel more familiar and inviting.

Your Flat: Your Personal Sanctuary

First and foremost, your flat is your personal, unique haven. Making it your own space can help you settle in. I added fairy lights and LEDs around my room to brighten the space (as flats can be quite dark). I also spread photos of family and friends across my room to remind me of home, creating a comforting environment that feels warm and cosy.

The Common: A Quiet Escape

When you need to escape your flat to avoid feeling cooped up but still want a quiet, personal space, The Common is the place to be. I loved walking to The Common and enjoying a bit of nature in between lectures. It’s also a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a picnic even!

The Courtyard: Outdoor Relaxation

Part of the Below Deck area near The Cube, The Courtyard is a heated outdoor space perfect for catching fresh air between study sessions or while socialising with friends. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed study setting or an outdoor hangout, this spot has you covered.

The Bouldering Wall: Try Something New

If you’re looking for a fun and active way to break up your routine, check out the Bouldering Wall at the Jubilee Sports Centre. It’s not only a great workout but might even be a chance to try something new.

The Plant Pot: Vegan Delights

If you’re in the mood for delicious plant-based food, The Plant Pot is a must-visit. Located next to the cinema in Building 42, this recently reopened spot offers a variety of vegan meals, and you can enjoy them in the peaceful Study Space next door. It’s a hidden gem for both healthy eating and a quiet break.

The Bridge: A Study Break Staple

For a change of scenery while studying, head to The Bridge, SUSU’s café bar located in Building 42. It’s a popular spot to grab a snack, take a break, or catch up with friends. If you and your flatmates need a mini escape but don’t want to go too far, The Bridge is the perfect option.

Starbucks in Hartley Library: A Convenient Recharge

Need a quick pick-me-up during a long study session? Starbucks in the Hartley Library is a go-to. Whether you need to grab a coffee between research sessions or find time to meet friends between working, it’s a convenient spot to recharge without leaving the library.

With these hidden gems, you’ll find it easier to make your university surroundings feel like home. From quiet escapes to vibrant social spots, there’s something for everyone—now it’s time to explore and see which ones suit your vibe!
