Understanding Extensions and Special Considerations

As a student, it’s essential to be aware of the support mechanisms available to you, especially when unforeseen circumstances impact your academic performance. Two key provisions are Extensions and Special Considerations.

What is an Extension?

An Extension allows you to request additional time to complete an assessment. Situations such as illness or family emergencies may necessitate this. To apply, complete the Extension Request Form and submit it as early as possible before your deadline. If you’ve been unwell for less than seven days, include a Self-Certification Form. For illnesses exceeding seven days or other issues like family emergencies, provide appropriate supporting documentation.

What are Special Considerations?

Special Considerations involve post-examination- and assessment adjustments to your performance record to account for adverse circumstances such as illness, bereavement, or temporary injury. To apply, complete the Special Considerations Form within five working days of your assessment deadline or examination. As with extensions, include a Self-Certification Form if you’ve been unwell for less than seven days, or provide additional documentation for longer illnesses or other significant issues. It’s crucial to explain not just the circumstances but also how they impacted your ability to study.

Why Apply for Extensions or Special Considerations?

  1. Maintain Academic Consistency: These provisions ensure that your grades reflect your true abilities, unaffected by temporary challenges.
  2. Access Support: The university offers resources to help you navigate difficult times, promoting your overall well-being.
  3. Prevent Academic Penalties: Applying promptly can help you avoid penalties associated with late submissions or underperformance due to unforeseen events.
