Cost of Living Challenges

Michelle Fisher, Student Adviser

The rising cost of living presents real and ongoing challenges for students everywhere. From skyrocketing rent to rising grocery prices and the financial strain of other expenses, many students are feeling the pinch more than ever.

Strategies to Manage the Rising Cost of Living

While the cost of living is undeniably challenging for students, there are strategies they can employ to ease the financial strain:

  • Budgeting: Creating and sticking to a strict budget is key. Students can use apps or spreadsheets to track their income and expenses and ensure they stay within their means.
  • Shopping Smart: Buying in bulk, using coupons, and shopping at discount stores can help students save money on groceries. Planning meals in advance also minimises waste and cuts costs.
  • Part-Time Jobs: Many students turn to part-time work to supplement their income. Freelance work or tutoring related to their field of study can also provide valuable experience while helping financially.
  • Other Financial Support: It is worth looking at other possible financial support from the University and elsewhere.
  • Mental Health Support: There is support available from the University and finding a support network can help students cope with the stress of financial worries.
