Savvy supermarket shopping

Are you an international student studying in Southampton and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of food shopping? Fear not! Navigating supermarkets can be a breeze with a few handy tips and tricks. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make your supermarket trips smooth, budget-friendly, and enjoyable.

1. Familiarise Yourself with the Layout

UK supermarkets can be quite large and may carry a wide variety of products. Take some time to familiarise yourself with the layout of the store. Most supermarkets follow a similar layout, with fresh produce usually located at the entrance, followed by aisles of canned and packaged goods, refrigerated and frozen items, and household essentials.

2. Make a Shopping List

Before heading to the supermarket, make a list of the items you need. Planning your meals for the week ahead can help you determine what ingredients to buy. This not only saves you time wandering around the shop but also ensures you only purchase what you need, reducing food waste and saving money.

3. Budget Wisely

Set a budget for your food shopping and stick to it as much as possible. Consider using a budgeting app or spreadsheet to track your spending. Look out for special offers, discounts, and loyalty card schemes to maximize your savings.

4. Explore Different Supermarkets

The UK is home to a variety of supermarkets, ranging from large chains to smaller convenience stores. Explore different options in your area to find the one that best suits your needs and budget. Discount supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl often offer competitive prices on everyday essentials.

5. Bring Your Own Bags

To reduce plastic waste, many supermarkets in the UK charge for single-use plastic bags. Sometimes this can be as much a £1 per bag! Bring your own reusable bags to the store to save money and minimize your environmental impact.

6. Check Expiry Dates

When purchasing perishable items such as dairy, meat, and fresh produce, always check the expiry dates to ensure freshness. Avoid buying items that are close to their expiration date to avoid food wastage.

7. Ask for Help

Don’t hesitate to ask supermarket staff for assistance if you’re unsure about where to find a particular item or need help understanding product labels. Most staff members are friendly and happy to help.

8. Get leftover food on Olio and Too Good To Go

These apps are marketplaces for getting rid of excess food. While Olio is home to individuals with something to give away, Too Good To Go lets restaurants and cafes sell their additional stock at a knockdown price. If you’ve got nothing in for dinner, check the apps before heading to the supermarket (or worse, the takeaway menu).

With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle supermarket shopping like a pro during your time in the UK. Happy shopping!
